“She looks like her grandpa!”

I went to a family reunion over the weekend. They selected September 11th as it represented a day of remembrance for the 9/11 victims,  while serving as a reminder to us, to cherish our loved ones now before it’s too late.

There were nine adults plus munchkin — ten all together. Two of my cousins I’d never met as we are all scattered across the US and Caribbean. It was fun  reconnecting with my aunts,  as we’ve been making a valiant effort to stay in touch since the mini reunion at the funeral earlier this year. One aunt and her son flew in from another state,  so this was a big event for us, something we hope to make into a family tradition.

The one thing I couldn’t get over is that they are convinced my munchkin looks like my dad. I’m thinking in my head, “Huh? No she doesn’t!” Mind you,  these are my dad’s half sisters. I don’t know them very well so I’m still trying to find my comfort zone among them. I’m more familiar with my mom’s siblings so this is all new territory for me.

When all three sisters chimed in and saw the resemblance I didn’t see,  I had to raise my white flag and surrender. I was outnumbered! Later that evening,  when I asked mom her opinion on the munchkin-dad resemblance,  she was just as flabbergasted! She couldn’t see the resemblance either.

To me,  munchkin looks more like her dad than me. She’s a girl,  so there are certain feminine features of hers that are like mine,  but for the most part she looks like her dad. So I can’t see a strong connection to her grandpa if she only slightly looks like me. Oh well…  And don’t even get me started on what my mom’s siblings think or for that matter, what my ex husband’s family thinks. It’s a circus I tell yah, a freaking circus!!!

So is there some kind of conclusion to this story? Nope! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and apparently, so is resemblance!

I’m sure ‘the resemblance game’ gets played at your house too. Do you look like your mom or your dad? If you have kids, do they look like you our your spouse?Would love to hear your stories! ☺

Thanks as always for stopping by, have a great day! 🌷

  1. When my children were young, both sides of my family saw a strong resemblance to their side! I think it’s a matter of seeing what we want to see, and I also try to remember that they were comparing the children to people I knew only as adults. So maybe they did look like my children when they were children, too!
