Protecting herself

She feels numb.

She’s afraid to feel anything more
Than she already does.
She’s afraid that
What she seeks she won’t find.

She’s afraid that
What she has she will lose.
She’s afraid to keep searching,
Afraid of feeling desperate.

Her mind is in overdrive —
Confused, sad, frustrated, irritated.
A plethora of emotions
All mashed into a disturbing mess.

She works herself to the bone
So by the time her head hits the pillow
She’d be too tired to think,
Or at least that’s what she hopes.

She forces herself
Into a state of hollow existence
So she won’t miss the love she found
That’s now slipping away.

She lays her troubles in a heap.
She’s exhausted and overwhelmed.
She knows there’s not much else to do.
She wallows helplessly in her sorrow.

She did this to herself.
