I don’t bake

I don’t bake.
It’s not that I can’t,
Actually, I can,
And if in the mood
I rather enjoy it!
But alas,
I must admit,
I don’t like the feeling
Of flour on my fingers.
I’m a clean freak —
I don’t like the mess.

I’ll cook though.
I love to experiment
With my cooking.
Blending flavors,
Taking chances,
Doing the unusual,
Ignoring the recipe.

Baking needs too many rules.
Perhaps that’s why it peeves me so.
Measurements need to be precise
Or things will go wrong.
I hate that!
Cooking gives me more freedom
To explore my eccentric side.
I guess one can experiment
With baking just the same,
But I know what my strengths are,
Baking is not one of them.
At least I’m honest!

But then again,
A wise soul
Has been encouraging me
To dig deep and challenge myself.
So perhaps I’ll take a stab at baking
When the weather cools a bit.
Because there’s no baking
Happening here in the summer.
Remember that saying,
Get out of the kitchen
If you can’t take the heat.
Hey, you don’t have to tell me twice!

Nothing replaces love

For many of us
Love is simply
An elusive dream —
A dangling carrot before our eyes.

Sometimes we stop chasing,
Giving up on the hope
That such a thing
Exists for us.

We try to replace
That emptiness we feel
With things money can buy
But the void still remains.

Money can buy us comfort
And afford us the things
We need or want.
But sadly, it cannot buy love.

A life lived
Without someone to care
Can be awfully lonely.
Alas, nothing replaces love.

Pink on the inside

We’re all pink on the inside
Peel back our layers
And see for yourself.

There’s no need to assume we’re different
Just because our outer layer
Assumes a slightly different appearance.

Treat us all the same,
Judge us for who we are
And the joy we all can give.

Take a closer look,
We’re all pink on the inside,
What a pleasant surprise!

The Selfish Talker

Succinct, your stories are not!
You ramble on incessantly
As if to not need air.

I fear your phone calls
For you never let me speak.
My sentences become hijacked.

You trample on my words
As you speed on to
The next topic about yourself.

I wonder if the only reason you call
Is to hear yourself speak.
Why not just chat with your mirror instead?

My opinions only matter
When you need my advice,
Otherwise your own voice is all that’s heard.

Come to think of it
That’s not a conversation
It’s a monolog!

And to be honest,
The story never changes,
It’s always about you!
