Food on Friday # 42 California

I have a 4 yr old and she’s a picky eater. Needless to say, I’m always searching for new food ideas we can both try and hopefully love. I’ve even gone as far as to institute ‘Fun Food Weekend’ at my house, which means she has to try a new food when it’s the weekend. During the week she can stick to the things she likes (because quite frankly, I don’t have the time or energy to fight with her over food), but come weekends we experiment! So far my new strategy has been working well and she is putting up less of a fight. Yay!!!

I always enjoy reading Jack’s ‘Food on Friday’ posts, because I get many great ideas for new foods and I’m sure you’d love to get in on the action too. So that’s enough chatter from me, let’s jump into his selections for this week. Enjoy! 🌷

Don’t get me wrong, I like California, but sometimes the food there owes a lot to everywhere else.  So, for this week’s Food on Friday I’ve tried to come up with some dishes that I think would go down well with my friend, ‘the girl riding shotgun’ and especially dishes that aren’t so Mexican or Spanish in flavour.

No, that didn’t make much sense to me either.  But here are some great recipes from some great cooks.

First up this week, from we have this hoisin salmon with zucchini slaw from Tieghan Gerard at Half Baked Harvest.

Also from Tieghan there’s this great looking heirloom tomato and zucchini galette with honey and thyme.

In the Pursuit of Happiness

IMG_3789While I was at university in Edinburgh my favourite haunt was, without a doubt, Peter’s Yard in Quartermile. It is just around the corner from the university library and getting lunch there would be my daily treat during exam and dissertation periods when I barely did anything other than sit in the library, little did I realise back then how much I would miss those days when I started work!

Peter’s Yard specialises in the most delicious and fresh Scandinavian food with a wonderful choice of open sandwiches, salads, soups and now super thin crust pizzas in their sister restaurant just around the corner. Their breakfasts were also amazing and came on an old fashioned tin tray with fresh orange juice, fresh sourdough, cheeses, yogurt, fruit compote and jams.

Whenever I’m back in Edinburgh now, Peter’s Yard is the first place I go and the high ceilings, bright and airy…

A Pair 🃏

Describe a good friend in three words?

My answer:
1. Authentic
2. Understanding
3. Reciprocates

For me, the quality of friends has always been more important than the quantity. I’ve long given up on Facebook since the term ‘friend’ just doesn’t seem to apply. The context for that word just seems ‘off’ in the social media world.

And even if I love it here on wordpress, how well do we really ‘know’ someone from a few posts. Unless there’s communication outside the blog, is this platform enough to determine if someone is a true friend?

There’s so much more to how we choose friends. In many instances we choose the people in whom we can confide when our family members are less than supportive. Our friends fill a specific void, adding richness to our lives in ways we never imagined. Our friends become our extended families and sometimes are closer to us than some of our family members. So how do you define friendship?

Say hello to Jokerswild, the winner of my recent Food Quiz. He’s a new follower to our blog and now the spotlight shines on him! ☺

In his post below, he speaks of the very subjective topic of ‘friendship’. What does friendship mean to you? Read his thought-provoking post… It will certainly inspire you to inspect your current relationships. Enjoy🌷

BRAIN FREEZE

Friends is a word we use everyday.

Most of the time we use it in the wrong way

Now you can look the word up, again and again

But the dictionary doesn’t know the meaning of friends.

And if you ask me, you know, I couldn’t be much help

Because a friend is somebody you judge for yourself.

Some are okay, and they treat you real cool

But some mistake kindness for bein’ a fool.

*A little excerpt from Whodini*

What’s a friend, how long does it take to get one and how do you know when you caught a keeper.  I’ve got friends that I’ve known through winter, spring and fall.  Then I have some I wish I never knew at all but what seals your deal on a friend?

Sometimes, I don’t think friendship has to do with childhood, length of time or helping one in a bind…
